The Cala Biriola abseiling route is a spectacular adventure that combines trekking, multiple rappels, breathtaking coastal views, and the traditional scal’e fustes passages.
MEETING POINT AND APPROACH We meet in Baunei, then drive together to the Ololbissi parking area, located along the road connecting the Golgo plateau to Cala Sisine. From here, we follow the mule track that leads toward Cala Biriola, also known as Cala Birìala.
ROUTE DESCRIPTION The first section follows a wide and scenic trail overlooking much of the Gulf of Orosei. As the path begins to descend, we take a detour that joins a stretch of the Selvaggio Blu route, heading toward the Piddì sheepfold. Before reaching it, we turn right onto a small path that leads into the beautiful and narrow canyon of Sa Nurca, a truly magical place.
Once we exit the canyon, we get our first stunning view of Cala Biriola from above. Shortly after, we reach the first rappel, about 30 meters, which takes us down to a ledge where the second, even longer rappel of 45 meters begins. This descent brings us into the enchanting hanging forest of Biriola. Continuing down a steep scree slope, we arrive at the third and most spectacular rappel: a thrilling 40-meter free-hanging drop that lands directly on the beautiful beach of Cala Biriola.
After a well-deserved break on the beach, we begin the hike back toward Ololbissi, which also includes a section along the traditional wooden ladders known as scal’e fustes. If preferred, it is also possible to return by rubber boat.
